Baking Soda Substitute
There is almost nothing as disheartening as preparing a delicious treat to surprise your family and finding out you are missing one ingredient during preparation. It’s even more disheartening when you realize that ingredient is baking soda and there are no substitutions for baking soda in the back of your cook book. Some ingredients have common substitutions that will allow the recipe to come out near normal, and baking soda is one of them. Below are a couple of ways to use baking soda substitute in your baking recipes.
First Choice Baking Powder
Baking powder is the best substitution for baking soda. They are not the same, but baking powder has baking soda in it. Baking soda is a leavening agent that acts as a base in your recipes. In order to make your cakes and cookies fluffy, it needs some sort of acidic ingredient to react with. This reaction causes bubbles of air to be released which causes the treat to rise. Baking powder has baking soda, the base, and cream of tartar, the acid, already mixed together in the same canister. When baking powder meets the wet ingredients in a recipe and when it meets the heat of the oven, a chemical reaction occurs much the same as with baking powder.
Baking powder is not an exact substitution for baking soda. You will need to use three or four times the amount of baking powder when substituting for baking soda. The additional ingredients may affect the texture and taste of the treat slightly, but if you don’t tell your family they may never know.
Where food substitutions are concerned, there really is no other acceptable alternative to baking soda. There is one other possible substitution that can be made, but you have to be willing to use something you would purchase from the local pharmacy. Of course, if you have to travel to the local pharmacy you may as well travel to the local grocer and get replacement baking soda. Additionally, if you are in a place that doesn’t carry traditional baking soda in the grocery stores, ask one of the locals what they use as a leavening agent in their baking. There may be an alternative you don’t know about.
Other Substitutes You Could Find
If you are not educated with math and chemistry, baking powder may be your only option for this substitution. If you are comfortable researching the internet, you may be able to get sodium bicarbonate from your local pharmacy and use it. Sodium bicarbonate is the chemical name for baking soda. Using a preparation from the pharmacy means you should first question the pharmacy staff about using it for baking, depending on which preparation it comes in.
There are no other substitutions for baking soda in baking recipes. If you choose to not use baking soda or one of these baking soda substitute, your baked goods will come out flat and lifeless. You must use some sort of leavening agent in order to give your sweet treats life and lift. If you are running short on baking soda, consider using baking powder, in the correct amount, to lift your baked goods.
